“My husband and I spent a wonderful Christmas at The Shooting Folly.”

It was utterly perfect, they really have thought of everything. The quality of everything is top-notch, loved the bathrooms, kitchen is very well equipped (the freezer section of fridge even had ice-cubes ready for the gin and tonics - much appreciated!) They have a fantastic range of alcohol you can opt to buy, it is not overpriced, such a great idea. We didn't need to use it as had our own but for those that forget, there is something for everyone. Of course, we both enjoyed the hot tub, so good to get in after the long walk to and from the pub on Christmas Day (wonderful weather, stopped at the beautiful church on the way there and back) and the wood burning stove was so cosy. They don't charge for any of the wood, most places give you a free starter pack and then you pay after that, but not The Shooting Lodge. Neither of us can fault anything. It was all quite last minute, we felt we needed to get away this year, and The Shooting Lodge couldn't have been more perfect for us. As you drive up, it all looked magical, so cute and then you are met with the underfloor heating and loveliness. There were eggs and some lovely ginger biscuits, which I scoffed as my husband doesn't like ginger (bonus). The Christmas Tree lights were on, the place was warm, colourful lights around the hot tub - I love fairy lights so that's a winner from the get go. Loved the bedlinen, the styling, the chocolate on the towels - little touches are always appreciated. We both said we could easily live here permanently. I'll be honest and say that we would never have come across this place as up until July 2024, we had our beautiful dog but sadly, she died and that is the only reason we found this place as it doesn't accept dogs (understandably as it is a dairy farm). So thank you to the family, you've created something very special and we both felt it was a privilege to stay there and hopefully we'll manage to come back before we get another furry family member.

“Just perfect.”

...loved everything about this cottage. Sensitive and tasteful restoration of a historic building but with modern touches - lovely shower room, underfloor heating was a real bonus and the hot tub fantastic for the end of day wind-down. The location was brilliant...so quiet with only the sound of cows and birds audible, good walks straight from the door and a feeling of being very remote but with plenty of villages and small towns to explore nearby. The weather was kind, no rain for the whole week and we even had lunch in the garden in the November sunshine......watched by the cows! Highly recommend and hope to return.

“Lovely little lodge.”

Clean, well equipped. Loved the hottub. Just a note that this place is very very rural. Roads are unmade in places. And difficult if you meet another vehicle coming in opposite direction , with little passing places ! But as it’s this rural it’s very quiet.

“Fabulous place to stay.”

The Folly is truly marvellous and so beautifully equipped. Loved the hot tub and great to have towels provided for it. The cows added plenty of entertainment and other wildlife was in abundance. Lovely walking in the area with a couple of pubs offering excellent food enroute to the canal. A very memorable break. All dealings with Sykes were very easy and Stephen was a very thoughtful owner.

“Amazing! From start to finish we could not have been happier.”

So peaceful and the scenery was spectacular. Stargazing in the hot tub and breakfast looking out onto the fields. The little touches with fresh eggs on arrival and the log fire already lit added that true sense of being looked after. We will definitely be booking again and recommending to friends and family. “Truly exceptional property, we described it to friends today as ‘5 star plus, plus’.”

Everything from the basics like loo rolls and dish clothes, little extras like chocs on the bed and fresh eggs & local biscuits was done with care, quality, and attention to detail. The Christmas tree and decorations was a particularly lovely welcome with the fire going and underfloor heating on when we arrived after a long drive through ice and snow made it even more welcoming and special. The finish on the property was excellent, bed was extremely comfy, lovely quality bed linen - and ooooh the hot tub was heavenly!! It is obvious the renovation of the Shooting Folly was a real labour of love. The kitchen is very well equipped and laid out in such a way that cooking was as intuitive as if we were at home. Our hosts were warm and welcoming, the dairy cows were charming neighbours. The rural location enabled us to really get away from it all and properly unwind, relax and recharge. It was lovely to have a tour of the farm too, thank you. The Shooting Folly is conveniently located for Ironbridge and Shrewsbury, we were also delighted to explore the local towns and villages. We are likely to return in the very near future and try the hot tub when there isn’t frost or snow- we can’t wait!

Would definitely recommend it to friends. The honesty bar is a great idea. Rebuilding the Folly must have been a labour of love and it shows in the finished product. It was a shame that the poor weather kept the cows inside up at the farm.

“The Shooting Folly is a fantastic cottage for a couple looking for peace and quiet in an unspoiled part of the country.”

Everything is provided, including towels for use with the hot tub and even an honesty bar. The cottage is warm and spotlessly clean. There are numerous walks in the area in woodland, farmland and by the canal; a couple of local pubs and it’s only a short drive to small towns like Newport and Market Drayton. We thoroughly recommend it.

“This was our first stay at the Shooting Folly, and it won't be our last.”

We chose the Folly to stay over the New Year. We wanted a quiet and comfortable stay. We certainly got that however, the pictures do not do the property justice. The style of the decorations and furnishings is spot-on, and the attention to detail was fantastic. We are seasoned travelers, and always take some extra utensils/glassware - nothing was required. The hosts were great, and the fresh milk and eggs were a lovely touch. Definately recommended.

“This is a lovely isolated quirky cottage, situated in the heart of Shropshire countryside.”

It was lovely to sit in the garden and listen to the peace and quiet of the surroundings (and the occasional ‘’moo’’ from the cows). The cottage was really well equipped and the hot tub was a nice addition. We took our bikes and loved cycling around the traffic free country lanes.

“The Shooting Folley is certainly a very unique property set in the most rural of locations.”

If you're looking for a place to get away from it all and be able to totally relax then this is worth considering. We found the property very well equipped with everything you could need with the hot tub adding the icing to the cake. The owner Stephen, who lives on the adjacent farm, was also very friendly and accommodating. If you like walking there are several good local walks that can be navigated straight from the cottage, although we would recommend wearing decent boots and trousers as we found some parts of the walks overgrown and a little difficult to follow. Apart from walking there are several interesting places to visit in the area that are not too far away, with Ironbridge, Shrewsbury and Stoke all be very well worth a visit. The pubs and restaurants in the area are good, were particularly impressed with the Gastro Pub 'The Swan with Two Necks'. Living in Norfolk we are used to rural, but found this part of Shropshire to be on a different level. To sit on the patio or in the hot tub surrounded by cow fields (literally) in complete piece and quiet with just birds and the occasional cow 'mooing' was a wonderful experience and one we will long remember. “What a fantastic place to stay.”

The location and tranquility was just what was required. Yes its snug but its still amazing place to stay. Steve and Tracy have done an amazing restoration and have thought of everything. The underfloor heating was a god send when coming from the hot tub and when it really cold it will be amazing. The Folly is well equipped and well thought out. The hot tub cover is a manual lift and is quite heavy to remove. The only thing that would make it a better stay would be a bigger fridge and especially one that the door open the opposite way, it was a bit awkward getting around the table to get in the fridge. But would but highly recommend this for a stay. Will miss the calves in the field behind, they were very entertaining, just wish we had taken more suitable footwear and it could have been possible to have a tour of the farm and see the cows being milked. The fresh milk and farm eggs were a lovely touch, had forgotten how nice fresh milk is. Well worth a stay and we would return.

“Fabulous little getaway in what feels like the middle of nowhere.”

The folly as you approach it looks like a tiny “Wendy house” , inside it is just perfect it had everything you need and nothing you don’t, there’s just the right amount of room to happily “set up camp” for a week away. The bed is comfortable and lovely quality pillows. On the doorstep fresh, I mean super really fresh milk was delicious. Just a great week away

“My boyfriend and I visited the folly for three nights and it was just perfect!”

Lots of little extras that were well thought out. The fire was well stocked and the hot tub warmed up for our arrival, even some fresh eggs and milk from the farm left on the table for us. It's so cute and cosy and great for some romantic time away in the countryside! The nearest pub is about an hours walk away. Although don't do what we did and have too many drinks you can't walk back home! All in all a wonderful little stay-cation and we will be back again for sure. Thanks very much Stephen. :)

“The Shooting Folly was an absolutely wonderful little place to stay at, our favourite of all the Hideaways properties we have had the pleasure of holidaying in.”

Very well equipped, clean, comfortable and so peaceful, just the occasional mooing of the cows, what lovely, friendly neighbours to have. It was also fantastic to sit out in the hot tub, so relaxing in a fabulous environment. My wife and I can not recommend this little oasis of a place highly enough, we would just say that everyone should go there! Finally big thanks to Stephen for his warm welcome and knowledge regarding walking around the locality, and also for recommending a visa to Bidulph Grange (N.T.) stunning gardens. If you can - just book it!

“We stayed here for Easter and really didn't want to leave.”

The thought that has gone into every part of the Folly is evident everywhere. Small but perfectly formed, everything has been thought of. It is comfortable, well equipped and the perfect place to get away from it all. The addition of the hot tub is excellent and a perfect place to enjoy the peace and quiet. If you want somewhere that is quirky, comfortable and the perfect escape, then you don't need to look any further than here. We will definitely be returning.

“Had a wonderful 4 days at the Folly - we found it to have everything we needed, the snug was perfect on a cold winter evening (and the underfloor heating meant the wood burner was a treat rather than a necessity and feet stayed warm even without slippers!”

) We found lots to do in the surrounding area (car needed though), the owners were very friendly and welcoming, and the farm tour was a real treat. We would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

“We needed to get away and disconnect.”

The Shooting Folly was a perfect place for this. Peace and quiet all around us, a wood burning stove and a hot tub! Who could ask for more?!? The surrounding area is beautiful with lots of areas to hike. We had such a wonderful time we're already planning another visit.

“Well what can I say.”

..this place is like no other... we had such a lovely time and in the area in general but its the folly that`s the star of the show. Its everything and more that the brochure describes... cosy ,quaint, beautiful well equipped. The hot tub is to die for. If you live in the city you will never hear perfect quiet... you will here. We have re-booked to come back in September '17 and will probably come back again after that.

“We came here for a few days after our wedding for a "mini-moon".”

It was ridiculously cute, peaceful, and luxurious. The owners were friendly and popped in to see us and to check on the tub, but mostly they let us get on with it, which was great. It is a lovely quirky cottage - tiny but perfect for two. Just be careful not to bang your head on the low beams upstairs! Everything you could possibly need was catered for: the kitchen was brilliantly stocked with equipment, there were brollies, blankets, films... and of course the hot tub! It was so cosy and tranquil. It's really in the middle of nowhere with cows for company and fields all around. Recommend bringing plenty of food supplies - we got a breakfast hamper provided by the owners which was filled with goodies (although a little on the pricey side). There are some lovely walks in the local area too. I couldn't recommend it enough! We will be back. :-)

“We have just returned from a surprise 50th birthday treat my husband booked for me.”

I have to say I am very impressed, he could not have found a more perfect place to have a chill out weekend to celebrate. The cottage is delightful with glorious views from all sides. It iss fully equipped for your every need but the icing on the cake has to be the hot tub. We were lucky enough on the 1st night to have clear skies and a full moon, we soaked away for hours enjoying the pure peace and quiet with a bottle of red.......heaven !!!!!!! The cottage has been very tastefully restored and decorated and Steve was just across the field if we needed anything. I would like to say I would NOT like to recommend The Shooting Folly to anybody but purely for selfish reasons, I would love to keep this little gem to myself so we could book whenever we wanted to go but that would be selfish. Everyone should get to sample this little corner of paradise.

The property

Without any doubt The Shooting Folly is as unique a holiday home that we have ever come across.

Standing all on its own, surrounded by glorious Shropshire farmland and with long views over fields and woods, it is an unbelievably romantic bolt hole in some of the most attractive countryside in England.

Its history dates back to the 19th Century, once believed to be an old shooting lodge, the building is wonderfully quirky with a crenelated mock church tower at one end, a stepped gable at the other and in between a simple, timber thatched cottage!

In recent years the folly has been transformed (from a ruin) by its current owners back to its former glory using high quality materials, to create a very homely and unique 'hideaway' filled with period features and all mod cons you'd expect from a high quality home, including a super Cedar Hot Tub.

Please note Charcoal BBQ available - only charcoal to be used due to Cottage being Thatched.

In our opinion the Folly is just as perfect for honeymooners as it is for walkers, in fact anyone seeking peace and tranquillity in a remote rural environment.

There is little not to love in this gem, not least that there are two pubs within a few miles too!

CHESWARDINE

Market Drayton 4.7 miles; Ellesmere 21.1 miles; Shrewsbury 22.2 miles.

Cheswardine is a lovely unspoilt and rural village resting in northeast Shropshire. The village enjoys two welcoming pubs, The Fox & Hounds and Red Lion, a café, and a well-stocked village store. Keen walkers will find a network of public footpaths on offer right on the doorstep, including the seven-mile circuit from Cheswardine via Hales. Cycling enthusiasts needn’t feel left out as there are plenty of scenic cycling routes available, including The Shropshire Union Canal and the Shropshire Cycleway. Continue onto Market Drayton, where you will find the Market Drayton Museum & Resource Centre, the Market Drayton Golf Club, and the Damson Wood Walk. Further afield, you will find Stoke-on-Trent, with its Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Waterworld, and the Trentham Estate, Alton Towers for a fun-filled day out, and the historic city of Chester, home to Chester Cathedral, The Grosvenor Museum, the Chester Roman Amphitheatre.
