“Hi,had a delightful break,excellent directions info on parking etc etc.”

Excellent heating hot water,no need 4 fire,cold outside.not a brilliant flush on toilet but works!Yes stairs very dodgy tbh could easily slip and break something,also certains wound b good on stair window and kitchen when neighbour puts rubbish out! Very comfy beautiful bed,very clean fresh linen,towels,furnishings very high standard ,beautiful home! “What a beautiful cottage, ‘olde-worlde’, quaint and stunning!”

Beautiful local area, lots of things to see, and a lovely home from home. However, unfortunately some aspects did let it down: -The cleanliness was poor, so much so that I’d be surprised if it had been cleaned before arrival. I had to hoover on arrival, in one bedroom there was a section of black dog hair (must have been where the previous occupiers dog slept) being dog owners ourselves it wasn’t so much of an issue but was noticeable and needed clearing up. Downstairs in the lounge there was bits all over the floor and we have a one year old who is crawling so this was unacceptable. My daughter dropped her dummy through a gap in the bed in the second bedroom and upon retrieving it there was so much dust that I can’t imagine it had been cleaned in over a year. -The heating didn’t seem to do what we asked it to do and it was unbearably hot at times, we googled and kept trying different things but to no avail - the nest said the heating was off but the house was still 24 degrees and all radiators were still on. Also there was still a large pile of ash underneath the fire which has not been cleared away either. However we did not get to use this facility due to heating issues. -The sofa does need replacing - having read previous reviews I knew this had been an issue but in response to one review this had apparently been sorted - it had not. It has a large rip in one of the cushions, when batting the cushions back into shape dust flies out and you had to reshape cushions and put them back together every 30 minutes when sitting on it. Another minor point to note - it does say that the yard is enclosed for dogs. However the neighbouring property does have right of way for access onto the road - which shouldn’t be an issue once a week (for bins). However at one point we did notice the gate to the neighbouring property was open - meaning the yard is not fully secured at all times. It’s such a shame the above points were an issue, because it was such a lovely place. I think with some attention to detail it would be worth the price we paid. However staying over new year and paying premium price - we would not rush back unless points above were rectified, but overall we did really enjoy our stay.

“We loved the cottage.”

It was so charming and we really enjoyed the fireplace. An added treat to our stay was meeting Anne and her darling spaniel, Charley. Anne made us feel so welcome and she helped us with all our questions. We needed a way to dry our clothes and she provided us a heated drying rack. The village was everything we’d hoped for and everyone was very kind and helpful. Great location for our month-long stay. Will definitely be back!!

“It is a lovely quaint cottage however couple of points to be considered.”

1. The sofa is ripped on one of the seat cushions. 2. The sofa has lost all spring & firmness & is filthy with dust flying everywhere when you try to plump the cushions, which no longer plump. 3. The staircase is precarious for humans & definitely not dog friendly. You can see daylight through the steps & a couple of them feel like they are going to give way. 4. There are holes in the wall where it looks like an old hand rail was on the staircase. 5. The clothes airer is broken. 6. The garden is not dog friendly with low level gates & fencing, trip hazard paving & a shear drop with no railings. 7. The advert states there is a shop & food trucks, none of these are here & the locals didn't know what we were talking about when we asked. 8. The kitchen work surfaces still had crumbs on. If elderly people were to stay or children I think there would be accidents in the property & garden. If we were not seeing my father in law we would have returned home to Kent by now as the 4 days stay has been very stressful constantly following my dogs to make sure they are safe & the sofa not being sturdy at all & causing my physical medical issues to be exacerbated. In the end we came home a day early. I appreciate it is an old cottage however it should be advertised better with more emphasis on safety issues or lack of, the furniture should be clean & up to physical standard & truth displayed about local amenities or, again, lack of. Really disappointed as I was looking forward to a much needed & relaxing break due to high demanding job, this has been anything but.

“First, this was a lovely, quirky period cottage.”

.... BUT, sofa needs to be condemned!! Stains all over living room and bedroom carpets / rugs. Not been dusted in a very long time. Not been hoovered in a very long time. Insufficient crockery, glassware and cooking equipment. Toilet seat needs to fit the toilet! Rear yard was a weed patch, not a pleasant place to enjoy the sun. Cottage details stated a BBQ - no BBQ!

“Tried to ring sykes phone line within the opening times and got the answering machine, made the best of a weekend away to celebrate our daughters birthday.”

When we arrived there were 2 pillowcases full of the previous guests dirty linen and towles, rubbish in the garden.The settee was filthy and smelt, we had to cover with towles.The curtains were very ripped and tattered as was the settee.The throw on the bed was stained.The cottage could be lovely but looked like nobidy really cared and were just in it for the money. Very hard to contact Sykes

“Its a lovely cottage but the sofa defo needs changing.”

We spent 4 ngts and we reported this issue same night that we need vaccum to clean the sofa as we just itched and itched. I had to have tablets so stop itching. No answer from the owner at all through sykes and i had to cover the sofa cushions with black bags then sat on it. It was ridiculous. The charge for this cotttage is not cheap so they must change the sofa atleast. Ridiculous stay and i m just not happy at all. Also the owner should maintain the garden as its just dumpyard to be honest. The carpet in the main bedroom is just full of stains and filthy.I would not recommend this cottage to anyone at all. One massively unhappy customer.

“Overall a lovely property, however on arrival whilst using the kitchen sink water flooded the kitchen unit.”

On inspection the waste pipes from both sinks were loose & one had come away completely. We managed to reconnect the pipework & tightened all other joints. The garden patio area was overgrown with tall weeds which we cutback so as to make the patio usable.

“Beautiful cottage, lovely decor, however sofa and master bedroom curtains desperately need replacing.”

Both are torn and large holes, sofa is also very lumpy and uncomfortable. Unfortunately buns were left overflowing in the back yard. We were able to live with these things for our short stay and had a wonderful stay, we may have struggled with sofa if more than a could of nights as we did end up sitting in the floor leaning against it rather than in it some of the time. Luckily, it being February, only the dog was really using the garden, however if we had wanted to sit out the bins would also have been a problem.

“Quintessential thatched cottage in a pretty Oxfordshire village.”

Very warm, cosy and well cleaned. Easy parking outside. Nice walks along Oxford Canal and around Upper Heyford Airbase. Close to Blenheim Palace, Oxford Park and Ride and British Motor Museum. Only negatives were the tricky stairs; unfortunately, the handrail was badly fixed and had come away from the wall. Additionally, there seems to be confusion over the bins. The manual says to be guided by the neighbour's bin but it looks like he had put the wrong one out and therefore so did we. This must have happened before as both bins were already full. Maybe a printed timetable would be helpful

“Charming and cosy cottage.”

Having read some of the reviews, we were concerned that it might not live up to expectation, but it was cosy and comfortable for a couple of nights, and those issues in the previous reviews weren’t a problem. The kitchen was well equipped. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom adequate, though a better shower situation would have been ideal! The sitting room had a strange (almost cheesy) smell which was a downside.

“Generally we had a fabulous stay in Fountain View Cottage.”

Great location. Very quiet. Parking was good outside the house. Inside, characterful cottage. Comfortable. The kitchen floor could do with a sand & varnish. Really good supply of hot water. Good sized sink. Enjoyed sitting in the kitchen with the french doors open. Pretty basic in terms of pans, utensils, oven dishes etc but that's fine for a holiday cottage (all one needs) and we were mega impressed by the sharpness of the kitchen knives. Very noisy & creaky with the floors but that's what you might expect. Stairs a bit iffy, they really need properly rebuilding. Lovely bedrooms. Could possibly do with a wardrobe but again not essential. A common issue we have when staying for a week and self-catering is the size of the fridge & freezer, but I guess space is limited. I would imagine that the fire with inglenook would be amazing in the winter. Owner very generous with piled up supplies of toilet paper, kitchen towel, soap dispensers, dish washer. washing tablets etc. Gave a welcome feel. Lots of lamps for background lighting. Maybe bin collections need to be made a bit more clear - we were able to put the rubbish bin out but it seemed that the previous occupants had not put out the recycling bin. Hope all the above is helpful & not picky. We give the cottage a definite thumbs up. Thank you for our lovely holiday, we hit bullseye with the weather. Beautiful part of the world! Friendly inhabitants. Beautiful stretch of the Oxford Canal.

We had a technical issue which we communicated back to the owner who lives overseas seemingly. Although unable to solve the issue he was very communicative, and it didn't spoil our short break at the lovely cottage. I feel perhaps Sykes should be more approachable if issues occur, most other firms would have had a solution. Also i feel a picture of the garden would have been useful on the listing. All in all fountain view is a delightful cottage, with great little walks nearby and plenty to see with only a short drive. It is an 18th century cottage with very tasteful and appropriate decor.

“Very well thought out tastefully decorated cottage in a beautiful quiet villiage with plenty of walks .”

The front bedroom bed was nice and firm and I had some excellent sleep . There is a small play area by the old schoolhouse and a larger one on Somerton road by the community centre for children . Wifi works ( o.k not in kitchen due to stone walls but all over the rest of the cottage .) The window has been replaced with tasteful double glazed patio door and windows . Garden is only walked through on bin days as there is historic right of way for the terrace to get their bins out and the cottage is end of terrace . Toilet flushes . The tv set up is currently messed up ( early june 22 ) and ovens are not working - which i have only just reported . The grill, hob and, toaster , kettle and microwave are fine . Fresh eggs are available in the morning care of a neighbours honesty stall.

“Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting and village.”

Some gorgeous short walks along the canal and the Yuke is a fabulous place for something to eat at lunchtime. There were some things that were a little odd and would improve things hugely. The lighting is very dim in most places, especially in the kitchen where washing up is done in near darkness. There is little or no cooking crockery, or serving bowls or even scissors so people would be advised to take these with them, very strange!

“Beautiful character cottage.”

Very well furnished and equipped and very clean. Lovely quiet area. Had issue with accessing as key code had been changed and Sykes had sent me an old one. I had read a review where this had already been a problem, so a shame it hadn't been resolved as needed to ring owner. Never got to grips with thermostat for heating and water so hot water a bit hit and miss. Very mild during our stay (end October) so didn't mar it. Also couldn't work out how to use microwave correctly but managed to get it to work in a fashion! Some instructions for both would improve things. Would have been 5 stars without these issues. Personally would also prefer covering on windows/back door, particularly during dark winter evenings and with rear being accessed by neighbours. Sykes generally very accommodating about moving my booking to a year later to attend a covid postponed wedding.

“The cottage was a big disappointment.”

Despite my having emailed and spoken to your personnel the bbq was dirty and unusable. The stairs were a nightmare and certainly not suitable for older persons or anyone who was not fully mobile. There was one dishwasher tablet, no washing up liquid, food in the cupboards from other people. There were only 2 toilet rolls for 4 people for a week. The garden furniture was rusty. There was a right of way over the garden for adjoining neighbours to put out their rubbish bins and bring their bicycles through which we were not aware of. The cistern lid was removed by us and left on a shelf in the bathroom as the cistern did not work properly with it on. On a bit more positive note the beds were comfortable and the cottage was clean but for the rest it was a big disappointment and we will not ever take a staycation again in the UK as we had such a poor experience on this occasion. For the same cost we could have gone abroad all in and had a much nicer experience. It certainly was not value for money. We left the cottage as we found it. All rubbish was put in the bin, dogs mess cleaned up and beds stripped and folded. The key was replaced in the key safe prior to our leaving. Overall a very disappointing experience. Do you check out the properties before you advertise them? If not we would suggest you do start doing so. We would never use Sykes to book anywhere again either in the UK or abroad.

. garden furniture chairs not fit to be used very old rusty .. table worn… bins laden with bags unsure if neighbours or previous visitors … barbecue dirty and unusable… lots of garden refuse laying about .. am sure wouldn’t take much to clean it all up for future visitors and make it a safe place for young children and pets . This was the only negative we had a great time and would definitely recommend if the garden was sorted

“The cottage was very sweet and pretty, in a lovely village, but there were some issues that tainted our stay somewhat.”

Firstly, the listing was advertised as having a garden and a barbecue - it didn't mention that the garden was overgrown with weeds, covered in empty bottles and rubbish bags, or that the barbecue was full of grease, fat and ash from previous use. We came from London (where we live in flats) and specifically chose somewhere with a garden so that we could sit out and enjoy the outdoors with the dogs. It wasn't a pleasant garden to sit in unfortunately. There were a few things that weren't there when we arrived which we thought should have been provided. There was no toilet roll and no sponge / dish cloth. I wouldn't have minded bringing them but it wasn't stated that we'd need to and it's something we all expected would be there. There was also no soap by either of the sinks so make sure you bring that too. There were also some issues with the back door as it had a pane missing and also was very difficult to open and close. The listing states that there is a local pub but it has actually closed down. I know this isn't the owner's fault but I just thought I'd mention it so that the advert can reflect that there isn't a local pub. There are a few in the surrounding villages but we couldn't just walk to the pub for dinner as we had planned to based on the listing. I was informed before arrival that there would be a Covid-safe level of cleaning completed. This was definitely not the case. I'd say that for something to be cleaned to make it Covid-safe that should include things like door handles, taps, cupboards, worktops, light switches etc. but there was dirt and dust on all of these areas, as well as all over the house. We paid over £800 for a weekend stay and the standard of the cottage really didn't reflect that price which was upsetting.

We loved the village, the fireplace and the cottage's style. It was also toasty warm in October. The sofa was a bit worn, there isn't much storage room in the kitchen for food and it was missing things like a vegetable peeler and measuring jug. But generally a lovely place for a break.

It is in a quiet* location with nearby walking beside the canal. The beautiful Cotswolds are within easy driving distance. *it can feel a little remote as the grocery shop is quite a walk away and the local pub has limited hours. There’s a lovely pub at Lower Heyford within walking distance along the towpath.

A very comfortable, homely property, with incredibly comfortable beds (slept really well). However, the broken glass pane (door) and misshaped door (made it difficult to shut) did somewhat dampen the experience. Had we not been 3 adults, we would not have stayed in the property and insisted on a different property/refund.

“It is a lovely characterfull cottage.”

There isn't much in the village. The pub advertises as dog friendly but wouldn't allow our small dog.. Nearest shop about 5mls away. Quite convenient for surrounding attractions (providing you have car) Oxford, Bicester Village, Blenhiem Palace, most of which we have been to before. We stooped off for short break on way back from West Country. Although cottage good won't return to area again.

“The cottage is in a great location, central for accessing all attractions and sat in a beautiful village!”

The village green was directly across from the cottage, and a large playing field 150 yards up the street. The cottage was very comfortable and well appointed, we would definitely use it again. The facilities score would have been a four but we had a couple of problems that marred it slightly, the toilet would not work due to a minor fault and One of the french doors had Come apart on a Bottom rail joint due to some localised rot and had broken a pane of glass and loosened two others. This was pointed out to me by the caretakers when we arrived and must have occurred the previous week. We had travelled a long way so we agreed to make do for the week, I tried to contact Sykes initially but there were very long queues on the calls so I contacted the owner on a number he left in the welcome book. He was very sorry to hear what had happened and explained he was struggling to get any maintenance due to it being a bank holiday. We still had a great holiday and would 100% use the cottage again, it was just bad timing. Thanks for a great stay!

“Garden was a massive disappointment.”

. concrete jungle..wasnt pictured on your website. We have miniature dachshunds who couldnt get up and down the 7 steep steps. Consequently we were constantly picking them up and down. We weren't aware that other residents used our garden as a thoroughfare on bin day..led to gates being left open and worries about dogs getting out. Day 3 we had no hot water..reported it but still hadn't had any response when we left on day 4.

The Barley Mow being just a short walk down the lane was excellent for a teatime drink & meal. Ideal relaxing cottage for two , we felt it would be too small for four people. It is definitely a cottage we will consider again if we want a short break away.

Lots to enjoy locally, including walks by the canal, freshly laid eggs from neighbourhood chickens and the fabulous service greeting you at the village local, The Barley Mow. The setting sun warms the garden terrace at the end of a day, perfect for a G&T or a barbeque and as the night closes in you can warm your toes to the crackle of an open log fire. Bliss.

“The cottage was an eclectic mix of rustic, ultra modern and most stations in between, but very characterful.”

Friendly village with decent pub and good walks, including the Oxford Canal towpaths. Cottage obviously furnished by a man. It lacked a hair dryer, shaver point (surprisingly) and the “ over bath shower “ was really a shower head on the bath taps which would have saturated the bathroom if used as a proper shower. However, we had an exceedingly enjoyable holiday.

Only issue which cannot be changed is the right of way for adjoining properties through the back garden with our dogs.

“The cottage was perfect.”

The location wonderful and my sister and I and two little dogs were completely happy. Lovely walks by the canal and open fields. Nearby pub with excellent food. Friendly locals and an amazing welcome note from the owner.

“What a delightful cottage!”

Cosy, warm, beautifully kitted out - everything you could want for a home away from home. Fab location in a lovely village, with canal and countryside walks on your doorstep. Booking and arrivals process was completely seamless. All in all a lovely place to get out of the city to relax and recharge. We can’t wait to come back!

“Really charming old cottage.”

Lots of original features including big open fire, beams and many wooden boarded floors (carpet in lounge and both bedrooms). Some may struggle with steep and bare wooden staircase. Sofa and beds were really comfortable. Would sleep four adults comfortably but seating in the lounge would be quite snug. Village of Upper Heyford is really quiet and picturesque. Nice walks around the village and down to the canal. Local pub is only a short stroll away and serves good pub grub.

Perched on the North West of Bicester and in close reach of the wonderful countryside of the Cotswold is the village of Upper Heyford in the county of Oxfordshire.
