The property

Stonewell Cottage is a beautifully presented 19th century barn conversion which sleeps four guests, in two elegantly furnished bedrooms, with two bathrooms.

This charming Cotswold stone property has a number of stunning character features including exposed beams, exposed Cotswold stone walls, a cosy wood burning stove and a glass covered stone well after which the property is named.

These features have been complemented by modern facilities such as wireless internet access, two Freeview TVs and a well-equipped kitchen.

At the front of the property there is a pretty patio area which offers breathtaking rural views, and off-street parking for up to two cars is available on the gravel driveway. Stonewell Cottage is tucked away in Maugersbury, a peaceful hamlet located almost 200ft above the valley bottom below and surrounded by glorious countryside.

There are numerous walks and cycle routes on its doorstep, many of which pass through the much loved market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, just half a mile from the cottage.

Stow is home to a number of independent shops, tearooms, country inns and restaurants, and the town has preserved many of its notable historic features including the bustling market square and the ‘tures’, narrow alleyways which were once used to channel the many sheep to market. Maugersbury is well-placed for exploring the many picturesque towns and villages of the North Cotswolds such as Moreton-in-Marsh, Winchcombe, Chipping Campden, Broadway and Bourton-on-the-Water, all benefitting from well-regarded pubs, restaurants and tourist attractions.

Further afield destinations such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and Blenheim Palace are also within easy reach for day trips.

Stonewell Cottage is the perfect retreat for a family or for a gathering of friends who are looking for a relaxing break in the heart of the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

The front door opens into the open plan kitchen/dining room, off which are the following rooms: Kitchen/dining room: Flooded with natural light, this lovely country style open plan kitchen area boasts a high vaulted ceiling with exposed beams.

Ideal for home cooking, this room contains an electric oven with four-ring electric hob, fridge, freezer, washing machine/tumble dryer, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, cafetière, toaster and a wooden dining table which comfortably seats six; Living room: This tastefully decorated reception room has a wealth of character features including a unique stone well which has a clear cover and can be lit up from within.

This spacious dual aspect room contains a cosy wood burning stove, corner sofa with seating for three, two-seater sofa, armchair, wall-mounted Freeview TV and wall mirror; Master bedroom with ensuite bathroom: With a striking exposed Cotswold stone feature wall and high vaulted ceiling, this delightful bedroom contains a four poster king size bed, wall-mounted Freeview TV, chest of drawers, freestanding wardrobe with storage drawers, dressing table with stool and wall mirror and a wooden chair.

The bright and airy ensuite contains a large walk-in rain shower with grab rail, toilet, wash basin and heated towel rail; Bedroom 2: This charming bedroom has been elegantly furnished and contains a super king size bed or two single beds, a chest of drawers, freestanding wardrobe and a dressing table with stool and wall mirror; Family bathroom: Contains a bath with grab rail, walk-in electric shower with grab rail, toilet, wash basin and heated towel rail. The wonderful wrap-around garden offers far-reaching views of the surrounding countryside, an idyllic spot to relax and unwind.

The patio outside the kitchen is home to a rattan furniture set with seating for up to 8, along with a charcoal barbecue and an old fashioned green water pump.

To the left of the patio, opposite the water pump, there is an enclosed area which can also be accessed from the living room and is perfect for dogs to stretch their legs. Off-street parking is available for two cars on the private gravel driveway at the front of the property.

About the location

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD

Bourton-on-the-Water 4 miles; Stratford upon Avon 15 miles.

The highest town in the Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold, originally an Iron Age Fort, epitomises olde worlde England. This ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly Farmers' market. The vast market square boasts an ancient cross at one end and the village stocks at the other, surrounded by an elegant array of Cotswold stone townhouses, antique shops, tea rooms, traditional pubs, award-winning restaurants and its very own cricket museum. Many walks and cycle rides through the beautiful rolling countryside of the Cotswolds can be enjoyed from the centre of Stow, with the Macmillan Way, Heart of England Way, Gloucestershire and Monarch's Way all running close to the town. Bourton-on-the-Water, known as the 'Venice of the Cotswolds' as the River Windrush runs through the centre, lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is one of the most popular Cotswold villages. The Saxon market town of Moreton-in-Marsh and the quintessential English village of Broadway are all within easy reach and make a great day out. Cheltenham (20 miles away) is, architecturally, the most complete regency town in England. A spa town with an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, it is famous for its horse-racing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. At other times of year, it is host to literature, jazz, classical music, science and food and drink festivals. Oxford, the oldest university city in England and sometimes called 'The City of Dreaming Spires’ has an abundance of prestigious attractions, including the 38 colleges of the university (half of which date back before 1600), the oldest university teaching room, the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums, and Botanic Gardens. Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also within easy reach, making Stow-on-the-Wold an ideal base.

Note: We ask that dogs stay off the furniture and that no trace of a dog remains after your departure. We ask that dogs are supervised whilst in the garden.

Please note an initial supply of logs & kindling is provided for the property between October until end of March; additional log supplies can be purchased locally.

Note: The Stow Horse Fair is held twice a year, on the Thursday closest to 12th May and the Thursday closest to 24th October, this is a traditional fair for people to meet up and trade which dates back to 1476 when its Charter was granted; Stow is very busy for a day or two before and after each fair, and a number of shops, pubs and restaurants are closed.
