“We loved staying in this beautiful character cottage right in the heart of Burford.”

The property was immaculately clean, beds were very comfortable and kitchen well appointed. The stairs are (as warned) very narrow and steep so would not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues, and the beams, whilst beautiful, are a menace to anyone over 5ft11, especially as the lowest one is right over the dining table. It is part of this gorgeous cottages character, but if you are booking you definitely need to be aware. We contacted manor cottages during our stay for a couple of ...

We contacted manor cottages during our stay for a couple of reasons. The shortage of wine glasses was sorted quickly, thank you. We were told there was a cafetière at the property, but there wasn’t, luckily we brought our own. The main problem is the first floor shower, we adhered to the signs saying to firmly close the shower door and no water leaked onto the bathroom carpet, but still water came through the kitchen ceiling. The shower head itself was broken also. It definitely needs looking at. We didn’t use it again after that first time and relied on the bath and the one en-suite shower at the top of the cottage. Shower aside, it is a lovely place to stay and we would definitely recommend.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and the lovely location. Thank you also for lhighlighting the issue with the first floor shower. We have notified the Property Manager and hope this didn't impact your stay. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

The property

At the end of Burford's High Street, in one of the most recognisable settings in all of the Cotswolds, sits a historic cottage known as Murton Cottage.

The cottage's rich history spans many years, earning it a place on the National Register of Historic Places as a Grade II building.

The interior has been refurbished and tastefully designed with utmost comfort in mind, while still preserving its original historical features that make it a truly outstanding country home.

The beautiful sitting room/dining area features two sofas, a 43-inch Smart Ultra HD TV, and a table with seating for six people, making it the perfect location to relax after a hard day in front of the crackling fire, including a lovely bookcase brimming with reading material.

The stylish kitchen features a variety of cabinetry on both the wall and the floor, as well as all the appliances and utensils necessary to whip up delicious meals.

There is a family bathroom on the first level with a roll top bath and a separate walk-in shower, and the bedrooms are located on the second floor.

One of the bedrooms is a Hypnos super-king-size (can be set up as a twin; please indicate at time of booking) with a smart 43" Ultra HD TV.

The master suite is located on the top floor, complete with a Hypnos king-size bed and a private bathroom with a shower.

There is a secluded courtyard outside with seating (and a fantastic feature, the old well, which has been illuminated and safely blocked) so that you can take in the beautiful scenery while your pets run and play.

In a stone outbuilding just off the courtyard, you can discover extra refrigeration in the shape of a freestanding refrigerator or freezer.

You can park right next to the cottage on the side of the road.

This home is situated in the heart of a classic Cotswold market town, making it convenient to walk to a variety of restaurants, bars, and boutiques.

Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Chipping Norton are within easy reach and are just as well-known.

Be sure to visit the beautiful Blenheim Palace and follow in Winston Churchill's footsteps for a more tranquil experience.

Murton Cottage is a peaceful haven in the middle of this lively Cotswolds town.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £300.

About the location

Burford

Burford is possibly one of, if not THE most famous of the Cotswolds' locations. With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, Burford is justifiably one of the most picturesque towns in England. Often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds', the town was originally a fortified Anglo-Saxon ford which later grew to be an important regional crossroads and wealthy wool town. Located mid way between Oxford and Cheltenham (25 mins each away) it is a little haven of history and beauty that many come to fall in love with when they visit.

The 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past. The church is stunning, a real gem architecturally with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford's great families. There is also the signature, on the baptisimal font, of Antony Sedley, one of the Levellers besieged in the church in 1649 - three of the ringleaders were executed by Oliver Cromwell's men in the churchyard. History awaits!

With little changing over the centuries, Burford is now very popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its shopping and antiques, and for the wide variety of places to eat, with restaurants, pubs and teashops. It is an ideal base for visiting The Cotswolds area as it is within easy driving distance of popular attractions such as Blenheim Palace, Sudley Castle, Warwick Castle and several National Trust Houses and Gardens. Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Cirencester and Stow on the Wold are all with 25 minutes from the property.

Please Note: there is a fully refundable Good House Keeping Bond of £300.00
One dog is welcome and charged @ £25.00.
Due to the age of the the property and the nature of the stairs, this cottage is probably not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Also be aware that this cottage has low beams / doorways - there will be places where you may need to duck!!
Please note an initial supply of logs & kindling is provided for the property between October until end of March; additional log supplies can be purchased locally.
