“Garden Cottage is in a great location for many towns and villages around the Cotswolds with an abundance of pubs, tea shops, independent shops and walks.”

There are also some interesting National Trust properties and Blenheim Palace a short drive away. The cottage provides everything you need in a lovely setting. I would however like to provide some additional feedback on a few things that I believe would offer a better experience and therefore rating. - Suitable sensor lighting along the gravel pathway to the cottage which is pitch black in the evening during the winter months would be very helpful. - Appropriate bathroom flooring rather than carpet would be more hygienic and provide a clean appearance. - Upgrade of towels and bath mats would make a big difference. The ones provided were well worn and one of the bath towels was barely bath size. - Bedding and pillows could also benefit from an upgrade. The pillows were incredibly heavy and hard and the addition of a top sheet under the duvet can detract from it’s comfort and purpose. If it’s purpose is to reduce laundry I would suggest this would not be appropriate practice for a holiday let. - a display stand of homemade goods to be purchased occupies valuable space where suitable seating would provide more comfort. - a few welcome commodities are always a lovely touch and make a difference. As long as these are packaged and sealed with the necessary content information, guests are able to take responsibility of specific dietary requirements. The above feedback is intended to be constructive and to enable an improved experience and in no way is a criticism of the property itself.

Thank you for all your constructive comments. Firstly, there is electric lighting along the entire length of the garden path which maybe now a little hidden by the Yew hedging, but activated by a switch on the wall ! New towels & bathmats now purchased. Pillows too upgraded. Yes ,the top sheet is to reduce duvet covers being washed to death, especially after a number of long & short stays. For your information no one else has complained in over 17years. Other guests love the availability to purchase homemade chutney , jelly & marmalade unique to Garden Cottage & many have purchased Bird In The Hand crafts to remind them of their time here. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Niki. Property Owner

The property

Garden Cottage is a delightful holiday cottage located adjacent to the wonderful Shilbrook Manor, itself a listed building built around the 1860's.

The property has undergone a complete overhaul and today provides a high standard of self catering accommodation whilst overlooking a simply stunning garden of two acres.

The cottage is situated on the edge of the hamlet of Black Bourton, which has history dating back to 1086, and is within easy reach of popular spots such as Burford, Woodstock and Lechlade on Thames Local attractions include Bampton's Downtown Abbey walk (2 miles away), William Morris's Kelmscott Manor (3 miles) and Jeremy Clarkson's 'The Farmer's Dog' pub (6 miles).

This romantic hideaway is ideal for a couple who want to escape to the Cotswolds. The owner, who is a garden designer, is also a keen horticulturalist very happy to sell plants (when and where possible!) in addition to eggs and home made preserves.

About the location

BLACK BOURTON

Bampton 2 miles; Burford 7 miles; Oxford 21 miles.

Black Bourton is a small medieval village in Oxfordshire, notably the birthplace of influential novelist Maria Edgeworth and painter William Turner of Oxford. Black Bourton has an excellent gastropub and is home to St Mary the Virgin Church which features superb 13th century wall paintings carefully uncovered in 1932. The nearby village of Bampton, one of the principle locations for Downton Abbey, is well worth a visit to discover the many sites of interest, including the West Oxfordshire Arts Gallery. Burford, the ‘gateway' to the Cotswolds, is within easy reach, and Oxford is just 21 miles away. An excellent base for touring this beautiful region.
