“Our cottage was very comfortable with a lovely view.”

When I asked for extra glasses and a roasting tin our host supplied new ones quickly - even though it was Christmas Day. Everything worked very well.

It was a change to have the kitchen and living room upstairs. With great views of the countryside. Lovely place to unwind very relaxing. Sonia and Steve were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay there again.

“Generally a very good cottage.”

Very pretty inside and the upstairs lounge/kitchen/diner gives access to lovely views. A lovely location though it is accessed from a busy road on the edge of the village. The cottage, however, is well set back so you don't particularly hear the noise once inside the cottage. There is a large shed in the outside area of the cottage, not sure is this is mentioned or not. It would be very suitable for storing bicycles in, should anyone want to use it as a base for cycling, subject to the owners permission of course. We would go back which is always a good sign that the cottage met our high standards.

“We were made very welcome, anything we needed when we both became ill was provided.”

The tv was the only negative, having such poor sound quality, we had to use subtitles. The village of Newnham was mostly closed and in decline.

“Beds and lounge comfortable.”

Kitchen a little cramped & could do with better cooking equipment. We struggled to cook a home cooked meal for 4 people. Inside kitchen cupboards needed a wipe out, which we done. Over all a comfortable stay & the heating was good.

Tranquil country retreat, I found the cottage relaxing, cosy and warm and a peaceful safe retreat from the hectic pace of everyday life, a little piece of heaven! The host, Steve, could not have been any more welcoming or friendly, a true gentleman.

NEWNHAM-ON-SEVERN

Gloucester 13 miles.

The thriving village of Newnham-on-Severn nestles on the banks of the River Severn. The village is steeped in history, and offers specialist shops to suit all interests, along with traditional pubs and cafes. This charming village, part of which is designated Conservation Area, has a tree-lined main street, many listed buildings, a striking central clock tower and is ideally located for watching the spectacular Severn Bore. The Royal Forest of Dean, England's largest oak forest, offers numerous trails that can be explored on foot, bicycle or horseback. Caving, abseiling and a high-wire rope course are on offer for the more adventurous, while fishing, golf, kayaking and canoeing are also available. Gloucester is just a short drive away, where you will find Roman foundations, Victorian docklands and a spectacular Norman cathedral (whose cloisters were used in the Harry Potter films). Littledean with its unique Jail Museum and Quadrophenia Collection, Westbury Court Garden, the only restored water garden in the country and the ancient caves and eerie caverns of Clearwell Caves (as seen in Dr Who and Merlin) make a great family day out. The ancient market towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth have excellent shops, pubs and restaurants, plus many black and white timbered buildings, or visit the historic walled town of Chepstow with its celebrated race course and impressive Norman castle.
