Planning on visiting? Here are the 7 best things to do…
Taking the number one spot of things to do in Chipping Campden is Hidcote Manor Garden. This garden may just be the most renowned attraction to visit around the town. It looks like a scene from Alice in Wonderland and is one of the UK’s best displays of the Art and Craft Movement gardens. Hedges form the borders of the different areas, and unusual shrubs and trees can be found. Visitors can wander through the maze to the various hideaways featuring fountains, ponds and flowerbeds.
Three generations of female gardeners have been working on these gardens since 1920, and the Chambers family now owns the gardens. While the gardens are technically private, they are open for the public to enjoy. There are hedges, colourful flowerbeds, a water garden, and beautifully lined paths to explore. With the tastes of three different gardeners, the whole attraction is quite diverse.
Opened in 2007, this museum shares the rich and important history of the Arts and Craft Movement in England. The exhibits show just how the small British town became a hub for designers, artists, and craftspeople. Looking to be inspired from the beauty of the countryside, these people began to bridge the gap between maker and designer. The exhibits show off the work of nine of the movement’s most important artists through jewellery, crafts and paintings.
Hidden away on Sheep Street is this antiquated silk mill from the 18th century. It’s a nationally significant building that features many of its original fixtures. Now, the mill functions as a gallery and a small museum to teach visitors just how important its role was to society.
The town is full of charming and historic buildings that are a primary lure for tourists. Taking a self-guided walking tour is a great way to learn more about the history and take some photos of the architecture. Aside from the Silk Mill, make sure to take a peek at St. James Church, Campden House Gateway, The Almshouses, The Banqueting House, Market Hall and the Grevel House.
The town is lovely so spend some time outside in the nature that surrounds it. The Cotswolds has many beautiful walks and Chipping Campden is a well-known starting point for many of them. Try the walk to Dovers Hill, and the walk to Broadway Tower.
Once the home to the Arts and Crafts Movement, it is quite likely that the town is still full of wonderful artifacts. While there is plenty of shopping to do here, you’ll want to make time for antiquing. Try Stuart House Antiques, Station Mill, Cottage Farm Antiques, and London House Antiques to find some true treasures to bring home with you.
